Chapter 7: There's No One Else to Put on the Rota

5 sources. Checked September 2026.

Every claim in this chapter is traced to the source behind it. Below is each one, numbered as it appears in the book, with a link that opens the original.

  1. Carers UK operates a free national helpline for unpaid carers, including those without other family involved in a person's care (service detail current as of August 2026; service names and numbers are worth reconfirming close to print). It offers independent, non-family advice, not a substitute for the statutory assessment.

  2. Care Act 2014, s. 10 (legislation.gov.uk, read directly, via the same PDF verified for the chapter on the assessment): a carer's assessment is available to a carer in their own right, separate from any assessment of the adult needing care. The Act's definition of "carer" is not restricted by relationship. It applies to a spouse in the same terms it applies to an adult child.

  3. Care Act 2014, s. 10(5)(a)–(b) (read directly): a carer's assessment must ask whether the carer is able, and is likely to continue to be able, to provide care, and whether the carer is willing, and is likely to continue to be willing, to do so.
    www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2014/23/section/10
  4. Care Act 2014, s. 18(1) and (7) (read directly): where an assessment identifies an eligible need, the local authority must meet it. Subsection (7) excludes from that duty only the needs already being met by a carer. So where no carer is meeting a need, the duty applies in full, not only where a family member happens to exist.

  5. See the chapter on the people you haven't asked yet for how direct payments work, and Care Act 2014, ss. 31–33 (read directly, already verified in that chapter).
